As the year's continue to pass, Nicklaus starts looking better and better. Tiger started out his career looking like he was going to blast all of Nicklaus's records. But as Tiger has slowed down (relatively), Nicklaus has gained ground. Check this out - Through their first 44 majors played (Tiger is playing his 45th at Augusta), Tiger won 13 majors to Nicklaus's 11. Tiger has come in first or second 17 times to Nicklaus's 21, and Nicklaus came in Top 3........TWENTY FIVE TIMES! Think about that for a second - Nicklaus finished top 3 more than half the time. Pretty incredible.

That's because the talent level wasn't nearly as deep.

I don't know. Nicklaus was hitting it 340 with clubs made of balsa wood.
Actually, Tiger is almost exactly 1 stroke better per round than Nicklaus over their first 44 majors. I wonder how much difference there is in today's equipment and course conditions vs. the 60s and 70s. I am thinking Fat Jack would have given Tiger the beatdown he deserves.
